Side Effects

Few if any side effects

TMS Therapy causes very few, if any, side effects and is generally well tolerated by patients. The most common side effect is scalp discomfort that is very mild and may only be felt during the first treatment session.

A targeted, non-systemic treatment

Because TMS is not a systemic treatment like antidepressant medications, it does not have the many side effects associated with medications that circulate throughout the body and are metabolized by the liver. Instead, TMS activates the neurotransmitters in your brain through a targeted, magnetic approach that does not have an adverse impact on other parts of your body.

No memory loss or confusion

TMS also has benefits over electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which requires general anesthesia and close monitoring even in the hours after treatment. ECT has also been shown to commonly result in short-term confusion or memory loss that can sometimes persist indefinitely. TMS, however, has not been shown to have any memory-related side effects whatsoever.

TMS patients experience:
  • No seizures
  • No weight gain
  • No sexual dysfunction
  • No sedation
  • No nausea
  • No dry mouth
  • No adverse effects on concentration or memory
  • No device-drug interactions
